STAIR of Birmingham is seeking a skilled and energetic individual to implement the communications strategy of the organization. The ideal candidate is responsible for developing and managing innovative marketing and communications strategies to assist with volunteer tutor recruitment, build awareness of the organization, and steward donors.

Responsibilities include social media management, graphic design, media relations, e-newsletters, video creation, editing and publishing, and website upkeep. 


Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, public relations, English, journalism or related field with a minimum of three years’ relevant work experience. Must have outstanding written, verbal, human relations and organizational skills, working knowledge or experience working with volunteers, and ability to work well independently and in a team environment.

Required:  Expertise in social media and e-marketing as well as in design software such as Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. Experience in website management. Proficient use of computer technology related to video conferencing, word processing and spreadsheets.

Preferred: Knowledge of video production, editing and publishing. Experience in database management and software platforms such as Jotform, Google forms, Zapier, and database management (or a strong willingness to learn how to use and integrate these software platforms) a plus.

A clean background check is required before hiring and must be renewed every three years.

Specific job responsibilities include:

  • Communicating with volunteers, parents, teachers, donors and the public via e-newsletters, SMS marketing, social media, and website.
  • Managing website. Intermediate or better skills and experience with website management with ability to make changes to the website, redesign or build pages, and improve SEO.
  • Collecting and telling our stories. Ideal candidates would be enthusiastic about visiting our tutoring sites to talk to volunteers, students, and site staff to hear and retell their stories through words and photos.
  • Designing STAIR’s annual report and year-end appeal (with assistance from the Director of Development and CEO).
  • Ordering marketing materials such as business cards, nametags, signage, and giveaway items and ensuring STAIR’s branding guidelines are followed.
  • Measuring and reporting performance of all digital marketing campaigns, website analytics, and other accomplishments to the Board of Directors every other month.

Hours: Core hours occur between 8:30 a.m. and 5p.m. Monday – Friday. In-office preferred but we are flexible with allowing working from home as needed. Occasional evening and weekend work required.

Salary: $38,000

Benefits: Retirement plan and company match; 11 holidays plus week between Dec. 24 and Jan. 1 off;  10 personal days a year; $250 to spend on professional development annually.
